“Hello, sir, I’m Blake. I believe you’re Vanessa’s dad. It’s nice to meet you.”

O’Malley took his hand and shook.

Zengo looked Blake full in the eyes. “Where were you yesterday morning before eleven a.m.?”

“Zengo …,” O’Malley started, in a low voice.

“I saw you yesterday down by the docks,” said Zengo, ignoring him. “Right where Hopkins’s jacket was found. Criminals always return to the scene of the crime. Don’t they, kid?”

Blake began to shake. “I … I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

Coach Morrissey stepped in. “Blake was at school yesterday. I had bus duty yesterday morning and I saw him myself. He pulled up in his car, parked in the student lot at eight a.m., right on time.”

“And if we double-check the school’s security cameras, we’ll see that shiny red car of yours remain in the parking lot until the dismissal bell?” Zengo’s gaze remained fixed on Blake.

“Sorry, Detective, school’s security cameras are in the process of being upgraded.”

O’Malley placed his flipper gently on Blake’s shoulder. “Kid, listen. Professor Hopkins is missing. Living or dead—we don’t know. We know you’ve been meeting with him a lot lately. Is there anything you can tell us that could help us in this case?”

Blake cleared his throat nervously. At that moment, Vanessa rushed into the gym, her eyes blazing.

“Dad!” she said fiercely. “What are you doing?” She marched up to the group, wedging herself in between Blake and her father.

“Calm down, Vanessa,” O’Malley said. Zengo was frozen to the spot—this was not his department. “We’re just asking Blake a couple questions.”

“If you’re interested in my social life, you can just interrogate me at dinner like usual!” She shot her father a look and grabbed Blake by the arm. “Come on, we’re going to be late for class.”

Zengo looked back and forth between O’Malley and the retreating back of his daughter, unsure of what to say. So far, these inquiries weren’t going too well, he thought. He glanced at O’Malley for the next move.
